Historically Selby in West Yorkshire was supported by the ship building industry and as important facilitator to enable trade to be brought in from the city.

Selby is the birthplace of King Henry 1 who was the fourth son of William the Conqueror and it is reputed that King Henry 1 was born there in 1068 of 1069
